I need to get some tires for 17" rims, but I dunno what to get. I want better traction and grip than the KDWs, but not as much tread loss. I know that will be a hard combo. I want to get the Pirelli P7000 SS, but if I can save some money, that would be great!

I'd recommend these for your description of a
tire with lots of grip (both wet and dry) and
decent treadwear characteristics:

Toyo Proxes T1-S
Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP
Bridgestone Potenza RE730

Check the wet numbers and UTQG ratings for
those and you'll see they're all great tires
for the money. The Firestone is essentially a
bargain-bin S02-PP with a different pattern
on it and the Toyo tire has done well in some
reviews I've read, even when put up against a
Pilot Sport or similar.

I'd stay away from the Parada; every single
person I've talked to at Tire Rack has just
shrugged that tire off as more of a fashion
statement than a serious performer.

Do you really need the all-season ability of
the P7000 SS? If not...

No, but I have been looking and I've been looking at the Bridgestone S-02 Pole positions. been reading the numbers off that and it seems like a winner. Of course I'm going to be ending up paying more that the P7000 SS.

And no, I don't need the All-season, but the price was a bit better that the P7000.

I would look strongly into the Bridgestone RE 730's. They are in the same price range as the Paradas, offer a better treadwear and the 730's are a less noisy tire. Now if you are looking for a tire that stands out and you want people to say WOW cool tires you can't beat the Paradas. Call Luke when your ready to order he'll give you all the pro's and con's we can't or ar least go to the Tire Rack and look at the compairisons yourself.

Kevin: Luke and Eddie have both expressed
this opinion... "cosmetic performance" is
the phrase that Eddie used.

It you're looking at the S-02 Pole Positions,
xchang, you can pretty much look no further.
Sure, a balls-out P-Zero Yellow setup may get
you the slightest bit more dry grip, but only
at the expense of noise and your confidence
in the wet. They're pretty much the best all-
round performer you can buy... That is, until
the S-03 comes out in Spring!

Only negative marks against them is that they
are somewhat "skinny" for their size (meaning
that a 215/45-17 won't be as wide as a RE730
of the same size), the fact that they're just
a little heavy... and the price!
