After seeing how the MTX-75 shifts like on a 2000 Contour, I decided that I might try to do the tranny cocktail. But, I'd like to know if the friction modifier is really necessary? Anyone tried to use just ATF fluid without the friction modifier? I have a gut feeling that local dealers don't stock these things.

Any Ford dealer with a parts department will stock friction modifier. It is as common there as 80W90 gear oil and SAE5W30 motor oil.

Your '95 will never shift like a 2000. They have the cables and you have rod shift. Tranny cocktail helps, alot in the summer, and somewhat in the winter (here in Cleveland), but I still need to let the tranny warm up before it likes 2nd gear shifts in the winter. Some have done synthetic ATX fluid without fric. mod. I used it. You could also buy the new MTX fluid from Ford. It is gold in color. No need for the modifier in this fluid. It is expensive stuff though. Was about $15 a bottle. Try doing some searches on the newer MTX fluid. It hasn't been talked about in a while. The '00 probably had the new MTX fluid in it.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

The friction modifier works great, IMO.
1st i upgraded to the Ford (Motorcraft?) synthetic ATF & noticed only very minor improvement in smoothness. A week later i removed 2 oz. of ATF & replaced it w/ 2 oz. of the friction modifier (in-stock at local dealer). Made all the difference in the world. Great stuff!

Damn! I got all excited because I can finally make my car shift like the DSM's gearbox (which the 2000 I drove felt like). But isn't rod shift mechanism supposed to be better than cable shift mechanism though? Originally posted by tdavidk: Your '95 will never shift like a 2000.
