Autocrossing is (relatively) low speed racing. Most cars do not get out of second gear.
I've got a first gen RX-7 and it's a lot of fun on low speed stuff, even with 150k stock suspension. 2nd gens are less tossable than the fist gens and are slower than a good running first gen (especially a 13B 1st gen). You can pick up good first gens for $1000-2000.
But, I think the cheapest to buy and mantain would be Civic or CRX.

How about a Triumph? Sounds funny, but they handle, and some have a 6 cylinder. A few of the late 70's models and early 80's models have a 3.5L V8 in a tiny little car. I've just been looking at the prices for them, and they range to about $4900 for one in great shape and someone willing to deal.

Thanks for all your input but we ended up getting an 87 MR2. "Only" 104K on the clock so it will last us a while. Just glad we found someone who would give us kelly blue book 1800. Can't wait to take it out.
Thanks again for your opinions.

> Kart?
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! This answer wins the prize!
A 125cc shifter kart will teach you more about driving, in a shorter amount of time, at a lower expense than anything else. Period! That's where the competition is now-a-days.

John, I threw that out there, because it can be a cheap way to go really fast and have big fun. Except, around here, there are often very few karts, if any, and some of our sites have "issues" with letting karts run (insurance, liability, I don't really understand why...) And of course, it's better if you have a pickup truck to cart the kart around in. So, karts can be great, but I guess it depends on where you are.

Yeah , but carts are mechanical nightmares. The guy with one in our region has trouble at every event, as do all those I have ever seen that autocrosss them. For those of us who buy new lawn mowers every year, a cart would be a disaster. Has anybody else caught the NASCAR commercial that has all the drivers standing around in front of their cars. One ask what is a four-letter word for farm wagon. I think it is meant as a slam against CART!

Nissan Sentra SE-R. Get one from the first or second year they were out...should be pretty darn easy to strip the interior and tune 'er up into a quick little runner.

I have one for sale right now in S. Oregon. It's an 85 Si (the lightest Si ever made 1950lbs wet). Tokico 5-ways and Suspension Techniques springs. These cars are animals on the race track. They may not have a ton of balls, but they act like a big go-kart. Another suggestion is late 70 early 80 rabbit GTI's.
Current Cars:
2000 CSVT #398 / 2150 - TRed
85 CRX si with a suspension harder then Ron Jeremy on Viagra.
