Ran my first auto x today and I am hooked. I ran in the GS class. My SVT is completely stock. There was another SVT there that ran with me and he had slicks on his car. He ran a 68.5 and I ran a 70.2. Not bad for a first timer. My wife drive it to and won the ladies class with a 73.2. thank you thank you I am proud too. Now I'm running the stick G force tires. I really don't want to screw them up. What can I do, would it be cheaper to buy some steele's and slicks, or just buy a nice set of rims and tires for the steet and use the Sock setup for AUTO X. If the slick are an option the where should I look. Thank you in advance.

Generally (IMHO) steel wheels throw off some of the weight and handling characteristics of the car. Maybe as a last resort, but I would first check the local junkyards or eBay for a set of E0 or E1 rims that were built for the car, and throw a set of A032's on them.

Just my .02

Yeah, once the bug hits ya, put a fork in you....you are done.

Was this a SCCA event? If so, was the guy with "slicks" in your class? He should not have been.

As far as tires go, the KDW's are a great street tire. I too would suggest you pick up a set of extra rims and get some Falken Azenis mounted on them.

And Like everyone else will tell you, there are 3 things that will make your car faster on the course:

1: Seat time
2: Seat time
3: Seat time

The more you drive, the better you get, plain and simple...Have fun, and good luck!

Slicks are allowed in Stock classes. Any tires for that matter.

I would get a good 4 point harness from Summit or Jegs. I slide around a lot in my Contour when I AutoX.

By the terms "slicks" are you meaning tires like Hoosiers D.O.T. autocross tire and Kuhmo Victoracers, or tires like the true Hoosier racing slicks. The later is not allowed in SCCA Stock classification, while the former is.

Yeah the D.O.T. approved is the only requirement for the Stock classes.

There is a difference between 'slicks' and the OEM tires on the car. Probably worth about 2 seconds on a course that long. But if you notice, many of these events are decided by .10ths of a second so that can make a HUGE difference.

Glad to see you did fairly well.

I run ROH 16 inch rims off of the WorldChallenge Contour. (used.. great deal laugh ) They work great for me, the offset is perfect. No rubbing or other problems either. Another set of OEM rims (you can buy them new from Bat-inc. at a decent price) is probably your best choice. After that I'd go with kuhmo's. Everyone seems to love them and the hoosiers just don't last long enough. Although the hoosiers are the stickier tire.
