My 98EO has the original battery and I'm thinking it's time to replace. Can't move battery from stock location, but can use smaller battery and SVT 065 kindly pointed out a place in another battery post where they sell a 13.5 lb. dry cell battery for, ouch, $155. I could go for saving 25lbs off the front end. I don't have a rule book, but seem to remember a rule specifying stock location and voltage and possible the word "type." Does that mean "dry cell" is a no go in stock?

The rule book says that expendable items must be replaced with same size and type as the standard part. This would include the battery in my opinion. Hope this helps. Andy

Thanks guys, I'll quote you when I'm getting protested. Matt, you don't say anything about my munchkin battery...and I won't bring up that short-shifter that gives you a HUGE advantage as you rapidly shift into second...and leave it there for the rest of the run.

Ohhhh yeah --forgot about that! Nuff said! Anyway I looked up the rules in the 1999 Rulebook (the most recent I have) and under the Stock section of Solo II, section 13, is makes no mention of battery relocation or swapping. However for Street Prepared, battery changes are mentioned in the electrical system section 14.9. The pertinent parts are B and C. B. The make, model number, and size of the battery may be changed but not its voltage.
C. Relocation of the batteries is permitted but not into the passenger compartment. If the battery is relocated and the original battery tray can be removed by simply unbolting it, the tray may be removed, or relocated with the battery. Holes may be drilled for mounting or passage of cables. Longer cables may be substituted to permit relocation. The number of battery or batteries may not be changed from stock. The area behind the rearmost seat is not considered to be withing the passenger compartment. All that being said, I think there is advantage to removing 25 pounds from the front end. However, how many pounds could we lose if we simply emptied the windshield washer bottle? I know it holds at least a gallon so there are 7 pounds right there! If someone is that he!! bent on losing weight there is a lot more to mess with than the measly 25 pounds off that battery. It would appear that the dry cell isn't allowed under stock rules and of course neither is the short shifter. How the SCCA justifies race tires yet denies a light weight battery or short-throw shifter is beyond my simple mind. BTW Cole, how is the daughter doing with the clutch?

BTW Cole, how is the daughter doing with the clutch? Bet I had 7 + lbs of water in my washer bottle, all gone. Among other things.

Bill, you got my hopes up for nothing :p I'm gonna get a regular battery to stay legal. But not until this one dies. Good thing about a manual is you are never stranded. You just run along side, jump in, and pop the clutch. You ARE joking about the Quaiffe, right, Mark? Say yes in case your non-Contour competition is watching!!! Matt, my daughter almost made it all the way to school without stalling. She's getting better. I keep saying repeatedly, "give it a lot of gas and even more at the end." She finally figured out the clutch grabs at the very end of its play. Still has some problem finding the right gear..goes 2 to 5 a lot, and downshifts the other way TOO OFTEN. I haven't had that 7 lbs. of windshield wiper fluid for quite some time..too lazy to replace it. Not too lazy at work, though. Working 8am til noon at the new job, then go across the street and work until 9pm in my video store, PLUS working Saturday noon til 10pm, and Sunday noon til 8pm. May hire someone after first of the year before this gets too old.
