I am looking more towards a street tire that is going to be pretty good in an AutoX.

As this is my first season I don't want full out 'race rubber' I am gonna test the water this season, and if I like it (Like I won't...) I will get another set of wheels for full time AutoX tires.

This is my list so far:
205/60 15
Yokohama AVS Intermediate

205/55 15
Bridgestone Potenza RE71

Kumho ECSTA Supra 712

or is it worth the extra $20 a tire for the
BF Goodrich Comp T/A ZR
Dunlop SP SPort 8000
Bridgestone Potenza RE730

Here's my take, FWIW. Whatever you buy won't last much more than the full year if you autocross much at all. I drove my SVT in six or eight autoxs this year plus about 18,000 steet miles. The stock BFGs are shot. If you're just starting out, as I was, don't spend big money on a "good" steet tire because it just won't last. And driving skill will need to come before you can get you're moneys worth out of a more expensive tire.

The flip side is that if you buy race tires now, both sets will last longer. Race tires, if not abused, will outlast street tires by a long shot when pushed hard in competition. If you're going to autox ALOT, this may be an option.

Sounds like good advice. My set of dunlop D60A2s are almost worn out, and feel a little slippery (maybe it is the extreme cold..... but still) For the same price I could pick up a set of Kuhmo 712s or Bridgestone RE71s which should be much better than the d60a2s but may wear a bit quickly.

What I was hoping to do is get into AutoX on decent yet inexpensive $70 Hi Po tires, do 6 - 8 events this year, wear them out (yeah part of the plan) then next year pick up another set of stock rims from a junk yard
and mount AutoX rubber to them, and then get another set of Dunlops for daily use...

That leads me to the next question
what are the lightest stock rims for the 'tour? Or would the Kosei K1s be a good idea for this application?

Look at the Bridgestone RE-71s. Most people forget about them but they are pretty sticky when shaved and are under $90 in 225/50-15 at Tire Rack.

I have a buddy that has the RE-71s on his "race" Omni. Hey, don't laugh! He raves about them and the car does do pretty well.
