okay if you dont already know my problem... I will explain first... The other day while en route to taking a drug test for my new job, I was driving along when I went to make a turn onto a side road, so I downshifted to 2nd and turned, but when I went to shift to third it wouldnt go. I decided to try 4th with no luck, go for third once more, and it seems the transmission locked up, couldnt move left-right, up-down at all, now I did cut my shifter down the night before, and of course (18) my mom blames it on that, but anyways, I finally get it back to neutral and try the gears.. well 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and reverse all work, third doesnt. So I was like I dont have the money to rebuild it now or anything, Ill drive it without third, did that for one day....
Go get in my car today to leave for work, and decided hell with it, Im going to try third for sh~ts and giggles, well I hold it up there and it starts to move forward, hmmmm.. so I pull out onto my lane go through the gears and now third works, maybe a bit stiffer but its working again. So now I would like to know, if Im just f'd in the head (not possible) if my tans, was just momentarilly GH3Y or if there may be a larger problem still with it. Or maybe I should just drive the car and hope to never see the problem again??? your opinions please.

Close your eyes and pray? Sounds funny to me. The only thing I would be worried about is a piece of metal floating around in your trans (temporarily blocked 3rd), waiting to get shot through the case at some point. But, no way to really tell unless you break the trans open.

In the ballpark of $700 to R & R the trans (not including actually working on it or any parts).

What about just doing the tranny cocktail (again), that may help flush it if that is the problem. Plus, if you've cut it down (the shifter) it may be possible that 3rd is in a different "spot" now and you have to get used to it. I know, long shot, but it has happened before.

Yeah, replace the fluid and filter. There might be something in there.

TommySVT, Contour's don't have a easily accessible filter. The tranny is sandwiched together, and the filter is only changed when the tranny is taken apart or rebuilt smile Just FYI, in case you happen to change tranny fluid one day and scratch your head looking for a filter!

Best way to flush it, btw, is to drain it, dump in your tranny fluid, drive it a few blocks, then park it, shift through ALL gears with your foot on the brake, then drain it. Repeat once more than fill it up and you're good to go. The tranny's have a screen, and draining/filling is the best way to flush out the fluid.

NEVER, NEVER get a flush/fill at a shop where they use a vacuum to suck it out of the torque converter. These will ruin our transmissions.

Travis has the MTX - no filter at all. The ATX has the "need to tear down" filter. And a torque filter as well. wink

I second the idea of draining (when hot) and refilling the trans. If there is any metal floating around you can check for it.
