Thanks for running the OBD-II scanner on PUFF. I know you're probably down at Carlisle and not surfing but since I'm not (whine, whine) I figured I'd write and thank you.

It came on again today. I thought it came on when I was in gear at very low rpms. Like if I forget to slap it into neutral and it bogs or if I'm too high a gear trying to accelerate. But I don't know why it came on today. I know it is something to do with my Jacob's but I don't know what to do about it. I know the CEL is coming on but I still think the car runs better with the Jacob's installed. mad What to do?

Carlisle? Not for the poor guy.

Refresh my memory - what exactly was the code we scanned? I'll look it up in the Service CD. Definitely an ignition code, but beyond that I forget. Had a VERY long battle with my control arms after you left. I wrote it down for you in case of just such a problem.

Brullen sounds (and looks) awesome BTW. So did Greg's Turbo Miata when he drove away. laugh

BTW Travis, the Jacobs is a super secret modification that allows John's car to travel time, thus the CEL. wink Really, it's an ignition module.

I'm not sure how good my memory is, but I believe it was a P0352. Not sure, though.

Chris from CTA is quoting me all of the front suspension components that BAT sells, plus polyurethane bushings all the way around and the 21mm sway bar. I think replacing worn parts on the car would be a better idea than upgrading struts and springs. I mean, it is only 4 years old with 86,000 miles on it. 1,100 miles a week can certainly take a toll. I do my oil once a month.

P0351 - P0353 is for coil 1, 2, or 3 failure (depending on the particular code). Definitely the Jacobs confusing the PCM. Might have something to do with the "wasted spark" part of our ignition firing system. When one of the cylinders fires, the other one on the same coil will fire in the reverse direction at the end of the exhaust stroke IIRC. Maybe the way the Jacobs is hooked up prevents that from happening, which tells the PCM that something is wrong. As long as you don't get driveability problems I guess it's OK, as long as you don't mind having a perma-CEL. No idea how you would hook it up differently to fix it. Maybe a post in the "Performance", "General Mods", or "Problems" forums can get some help from another person that has put in a secondary ignition module (MSD DIS-4 for example). Try Brad - he's fooled with ignition stuff before.

Of course, you know my opinion on the whole ignition system thing - the Ford Coil Pack is plenty strong by itself. Unless the system gives you the ability to change spark timing, MHO is that it's not worth the effort. To each his own though. smile

Funny thing - I have been helping a friend out in San Fran with the same code. He replaced plugs, wires, coil pack (twice) and was still getting the code. Then suddenly one day it fixed itself. He was about to replace the PCM as his next step in chasing the problem. He definitely noticed the engie missing though. Stock ignition electronics. Of course, I'm waiting for him to email me and tell me that it's back again.

Oil once a month? Wow, I bet that new motor can't come too soon. You coming to Arnold's in a few weeks (June 23)?

I honestly feel the Jacob's is better than the stock unit, RPM's are so much more steady now, it is incredible. I'm trying to figure out how to test other things associated with having it installed, though.

Shoot, I was hoping you would be able to help me figure out how to keep that pesky CEL from coming back. :p

Jason, it upgraded itself to a permanent CEL. Is there any way we can check it again? In case it is something different?

I'm going to try to contact Jacob's tech and see if they can help me. Also, I know there was a guy here on the forums that put in a full MSD ignition system for a nitrous kit. He said he got lots of CEL's so I'd like to talk to him and see what he did about it. I just need to remember who it was. LOL

Got the same problem, i'm working on getting a new one. Don't think i'll be getting one anytime soon thought seeing as how my car is 400 or so miles from here.

I have a friend in CA that had the same problem. Replaced the coil pack - still missing. Replaced plugs/wires - still missing. He's got it at an automotive electrical specialist, because we think he has some sort if intermittent open/short in the ignition circuit or the PCM is fried.

(Reminds me, I told him I'd send a pic of the circuit. Was supposed to send it to him last week. Oops. shocked )

John, we can scan it again, no sweat. Maybe in 2 weekends at Maple Grove or Arnolds unless you want to do it sooner. I'd bet money it just has to do with the ignition system confusing the PCM's ignition circuits. Unless you have driveability problems it isn't really a concern; just an annoyance (i.e. is it the same CEL or is it something else kind of annoyance). Jacobs should be willing to work with you to figure it out.

The car's not missing or anything, it's running strong as hail. I just can't stand the CEL. When was Arnold's again? Can you check it again just to make sure it is the same one?

I just emailed Jacobs so we'll see what they say.
