I just bought a '98 SVT. Only four days into ownership, and I'm ready to spend some $$$ on mods. Hopefully this question hasn't been posted recently by somebody else, but here goes:

Has anyone measured the HP difference between KKM's intake vs. the K&N conical filter (in stock air box)for the SVT's? I always thought unenclosed filters in the engine bay simply sucked in hot air.

Price no object, which one is better?

Thanks in advance.

Check out Capitol CEG . They have comparisons of different airbox setups and dynos to show what really works.

I got to be the guinea pig at our KC area dyno session, since I had no mods on my tour and it was nearly brand new, 3000 miles to be exact.

Dynoed stock at 167,4hp and 154 torque
Dynoed with K&N in stock airbox 168.7hp and 156.5 torque.

Dynoed with open K&N (same setup as KKM) 172.5hp and 156.1 torque

Dynoed with Bassani and KKM w/Mik's Heatshield at 177.9hp and 153.3 torque (See graph below)

Now since mine is a 2000, take off 5 hp and that should give you a rough estimate.

would have been nice to see what it would have been with ONLY KKM and no Bassani so we can compare the two, for all we know the KKM could have lost HP and the Bassani made up for it...

Kris did you miss the part where he posted...

"Dynoed with K&N in stock airbox 168.7hp and 156.5 torque.

Dynoed with open K&N (same setup as KKM) 172.5hp and 156.1 torque"

That's +4HP for the KKM over the K&N...

That's also with NO HEATSHIELD. I bet a good heatshield is worth another few ponies (since it's know to drop air temps by 30 degrees or more!)

So there's your comparrison!

ahh i see said the blind man to the deaf woman.. hehe j/k i didnt quite get it at first (duh) the (again) only problem is that K&N and KKM are 2 different (albeit closely related) air filters but whatever the point has been made.
also it is unfortunate about the torque loss after the bassani and KKM though

You will notice the so called "lost TQ" occurs right at the begining of the run. (I.E. Not comparable!)

You will also notice the first run starts at 2800rpm (it's max torque) and the second at 3150rpm. (it's max torque) and at this point and throughout the powerband it is higher than the old graph!

You will also notice the the torque curve for the KKM & Bassani jumps well ahead of the other setup from secondary opening on up. (I.E. where the car makes it's real usable power! On cam!) It also stretches it's lead through out hte entire power band.

That's a major winner regardless of the innacurrate inital TQ peak...

The HP graphs shows the same results. Once the car gets on cam (above 4k) it's consistently makes more power gain seperation through the power band...

A perfect dyno chart showing nice gains... Main I love the flat TQ graph!!!

Thanks for the graph, Eric. Looks like a KKM with a heat shield is the way to go.
