Today I changed my front brake pads. I had the rotors turned, then I put it all back together. Now when I drive down the road I get this horrible hissing noise like my pads are rubbing agenst the rotors. The faster I go, the louder it gets, it hisses louder when I apply the brakes also. The brakes seem to work fine, its just the loud hissing noise like Im driving some old clunker. Anyone know why they might be doing this?
I didnt change the rear pads yet because I ran out of time.
Thanks!

Sounds like maybe a pad alignment or seating problem. I would double check the retainer springs are on correctly. If this doesn't help, pull the caliper and see what the wear pattern looks like for more clues. Could something else have come loose and is maybe rubbing the rotor/wheels?

Before you jump to 'problems' its wise to bed the pads/rotors in...3-400 miles..'gentle' driving...

If, after time to bed in the pads, it still sounds funny, it might just be the pad material. It also might be from a sticking pad from lack of proper lubrication of the caliper slide pins of something else that might be hangining it up.

I figured it out. The pads have a metal plate on the back of them that is supposed to dampen the brake noise. Well that slipped down (on both wheels) and was grinding into the rotor. Cheap ass pads. My new rotors come in Tuesday. Does anyone know if I can get some decent pads at a local auto parts store without ordering them special?

Autozone carries Performance Friction Carbon Metallics.
They are a very good performing pad, no fade & average dusting...
PF also makes a Z-rated pad which is outstanding on all accounts. AZ will have to order this one though.
Whatever you do just don't buy Bendix or house brand pads.

It's after the fact now, but FWIW, but I'm using Bendix that I got from Advance. Stop really, really great. I don't have a problem with brake dust and while they are a little more pricey than something else, well worth it IMO.

Bendix makes the stock pads as well as Mintex pads. Mintex pads from BAT are great. Good deal too.
