Does anyone know the effect on brake pad life of running grooved and or cross drilled rotors? Common sense tells me that you would shorten pad life.

If so approximately how much?

thanks

It largly depends on how sharp the edges of the holes or slots are. If they are well champhered it should not make much difference.

Personally, I don't care for them. They provide a solution for a problem that no longer exists. They helped clear a barrier layer of gas that could build up with agressive braking on organic brake friction materials. With today's brake compounds, there is no significant gasing of the friction material that needs to be cleared off.

In my opinion, the only reason for drilled or slotted rotors is for looks, but using them creates other problems.

Actually, I think there are extreme racing situations (i.e., not autocross, people) where slotting still makes sense, but as Jim said, the racer is accepting a detriment in one part of the operating range to solve a problem at an extreme part of the op range.

Have to disagree.ALL new pads are 'green' and even F1 teams have sets of 'bedded' pads ready to fit, degassing of bonding compounds still happens until pads are fully bedded in....

I was assuming bedded in pads.

Any type of holes or slot will accelerate the pad wear. I offer it as an option only and don't push the drilled deal, but if I don't offer it someone else will. Street- drilled and/or slotted for looks. Track- plain or slotted only.
