Why would my Drivers side front rim be rubbing on my Caliper? I have switched rims thinking maybe one is bent from a friend bumming my car... but I dought 3 out of 4 rims are bent. It sounds like I have a rock in my tread on my tire when I go down a road so... I didnt think much of it being that I like in a town with all dirt roads. But when I hit the brakes I get a tapping noise form my brakes. I have new rotars and pads and thier stock. Well everything on my car is stock except foggies. lol I dirve a 1997 Mercury Mystquie GS and its a 4 banger. So I am pretty much askign what can cuase this and how do I go about fixing it.

Thxz in advance
Daniel

P.S. I dont know much about brakes

A knocking noise when braking can come from worn caliper slide pins, rotors that are machined too course, and cracked rotors.

From what you are describing, I would have a good look at the caliper slide pins.

Not likely.

I personally believe that they whould have been checked and lubed when the pads were replaced, but they most usually are not. Many brake mechanics don't even know it should be done. Some shops believe that if anything other than replacing pads and rotors is needed, the calipers should be replaced. As I have said many time before, the difference between an average brake job and a great brake job is often a matter of proper lubrication of the appropriate parts. If you take it back to a shop that doesn't know better, they will likely try to sell you calipers, even if they are not really needed.

If you look on the backside of the caliper you'll see 2 rubber boots w/ plastic endcaps. The sliding pins are in there. They'll either be 7mm hex or torx.

Was the spring clip installed correctly? They are a b*tch to get back in. I just changed the rotors & pads a few weeks ago, and I almost installed the clips wrong.
