Hi. I currently have a 99 SE Sport with an ATX.

Unfortunately for me the car came with rear drum brakes. Is it worthwhile to bother to replace them with discs or no, not with an ATX?

If I do replace them with discs, does anyone know how hard and or expensive it is?

I figure it shouldn't be too bad to do so long as I have all the hardware...just moving the brake line off the old crappy drums and attaching to the caliper of the new discs, right?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Tony

Its quite a bit more complicated than that. Look at 69boss302's post in the brake forums to find out a bit more.

As of right now a swap from drum to disc is quite complicated and the benefits don't outweigh the hassle and cost involved. You'll have to deal the e-brake cable being different, ABS valves/lines, the subframe mounts with ABS vs. non-ABS, the proportioning valve etc... Quite a lot is involved and many will argue it isn't worth the effort. If you can find a wrecked car with the same setup/options as your car then thats the best way to go.

according to ExtremeLX, the proportioning valves do not need to be changed.

I did the swap om my 98 LX. The parts caom from a 96 SE. It was no problem, the only unforseen obsticle i had was to swap the e-brake cable. Which requires dropping the exhaust. And the right and left brake lines. Other then that its a piece o cake. Man let me tell you my car will stop on a dime and make change. Its well worth the effort if you get a sweet deal on the parts (used ) like i did. Good luck >>>> smile

And three makes ten...have a nice day.

Thats some good news about the swap, guess I missed those parts in your original post. Guess I'm going to the Junkyard tommorrow. You even went from 96 to 98 too...thats a plus. Do you have ABS?

In order to do the swap extreme did, don't you have to find a car with rear discs but without ABS? please correct me if I am wrong 'cause I really want to do this.

I don't think that you do. I'm pretty sure that all of the hardware is the same except for the rear pressure reducing valves. I do know that the pressure reducing valves are different for ABS compared to non ABS. I also know that when the recall was done on replacing the rear pressure reducing valves that the drum brake cars used the same valve part number as the disc brake cars. The ABS cars were not involved with the recall and do have a different part number.

If anyone else has additional insight, please jump in here.

Oh, also, I would strongly recommend upgrading the fronts to the SVT size as well. I think that the larger front brakes makes even more difference than the rear discs.

On the ABS thing, you can swap a ABS rear discs to a car without ABS but not the other way around. This is what I'm doing, taking the rear discs from Buckshot77 and replacing my drums on the cougar which doesn't have ABS. The swap doesn't look hard at all and like extremeLX said you will have to swap e-brake cables which will be time consuming but not hard. I'll be writing a nice "How-to" with pictures when we do mine.
