Hi,
I'm on the phone with the parts store for rear shoes for my '97 Contour GL. I don't have the car here, just the VIN which is
1FALP6535VK107657
Can anyone tell if I have the 8" or 9" brakes ?
The only info I can give that they're slightly different (how the springs are set up) than the pictures in the Haynes book.
thanks,
Tivadar

The only way to tell is to take a drum off and measure it. Ford's catalog should be a little more helpful.

4 cylinder equipped vehciles use an 8" drum. V6 vehicles use a 9" drum.

The 1998 Ford Manual shows ONLY a 9" drum for ALL Contours and Mystiques. I can't help you with a 1997.

The parts guy told me that Ford switched from 8" to 9" during a certain month in build year '96 (I succeeded to forget the month), my car's build date is 07/96, so I'll get the 8" brakes.

you can tell by looking at the drum. the 9" drums have a very flat "face" (the part that you see). they look like a perfect cylinder.
the 8" drums have a bumpy face that looks like a tapered cylinder. the 8" drums also rust a whole lot easier for some reason.

Going by your description, baco, mine sound like 8"ers...any idea how difficult it would be to "Super Size" them?

i'm going to upgrade to disks in the back. i know it won't add that much stopping power, but they will look so much better than my rusty drums.

Sorry to be jumping in on this topic a little late, but I'm getting ready to replace my brakes soon. I have a 98 GL Sport (4cyl w/15 in wheels). According to this I should have the 9" drums, right? or am I wrong about that?
Thanks guys.
