Done this several times, keeping the reverse lockout (RLO) means only cutting off about 3/4 inch to maintain the lower clearence for RLO.
Using an after market knob with a set screw alloys you to shorten is as much as you want. And you can use what ever knob you want that doesn't have the RLO hole on the bottom.
Start off with 2 inches and go shorter from there.

Guys! Don't do it yet! When I went to the Plattsburgh meet, we discussed about why can't we do it on my car (and all pre-98's). The problem is - you have to remove the entire unit to do this. If you don't and just cut the shifter, you'll cut the rod that pull the reverse lock-out too. The result is opposite to what you think - you can't shift into reverse at all because you can't pull the block up. If you want to cut the shifter, you have to get under the car and take the shifter to rod linkage apart then either grind the block off or disconnect the mechanism and re-adapt the lockout at a lower position (latter is major PITA).

I just had my shifter cut in my 98 Sport, Love it so far, I had 3 inches cut off and rethreaded, total? $12 total and an hour worth the labor and I love the way it feels, I took the reverse lockout and cut it way down so that my shift boot could still fit onto the little ring that holds it up, but there still is alot of slack on my shift boot, btw they need to use a 12mm diecast.

Wait...wait...wait! If this is true, then how have other pre98 owners succesfully cut thier shifter down? Now I'm totaly confused

I just cut off 2 1/2 inches of my shifter and it works great. Only problem I've run into is as I was screwing the knob on the whole shifter assembly rotated. If any of you know what I did please help.

Yes the pre 98 cars have a rod up through the center of the shifter for revese lock out.
Chopping the shifter only works on the 98 and up cars.
There has to be a way to bypass the lock out from under the car, then you could cut the shifter.

You don't have to re-thread the shaft!
Just buy a Shifter that is the old slide on/ screw in the side type.
