So my dad is getting a new car (VW Jetta), and low and behold, part of the price of the car is a $500 emissions charge! The dealer said it was the same as the California vehicle requirements, and that MD is now requiring the same/similar standards. This might have been true for a while, but I just found out and thought it was interesting. Those emissions requirements end up slightly knocking down the engine output don't they?

I doubt it.

There are no emissions requirements at wide-open-throttle, so the mixture can be as rich as is required for maximum performance (EGR also shuts off at WOT).

I don't think there's that much difference between CA emissions and Federal emissions these days, anyway.

Cali emissions pacages are now "Northeast emissions package" beginning with 1999MY IIRC. Not sure if MD is part of that group, but I think my 98 SVT was the last year I could have bought a non-CA emissions SVT here in Pennsy. Ford doesn't charge differently for the different packages, which I found out when Mom was looking for her 01 Focus (which has CA/NE emissions).

EDIT: Just checked, MD does require the emissions package, but the invoice cost is $99 according to www.edmunds.com on a 2002 Jetta.
