The first annual National Grand Prix of Washington D.C., an international, annual motorsports event and festival on the grounds of Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium will be held July 19-21, 2002.
The event, which is expected to provide economic impact of $350 million over a ten-year period, will showcase the American Le Mans Series, an international sports car endurance racing series.
The race is one of ten on the 2002 American Le Mans Series schedule. It will be the first major autoracing event in the D.C. metropolitan area in more than 80 years and will be televised live on NBC to more than 300 million homes worldwide.
A Trans-Am Series race, also part of the weekend events will be televised nationally by CBS. The corresponding three-day festival will feature a rock concert, car shows and a celebrity race among other events.
