Mitsubishi HDTV!

Oh... that's right, that's after I close on my house next month. wink

Seriously though, yesterday I picked up my 1999 SVT. So now I'll be able to make it to the meets with the rest of y'all cool people. It's pretty nice I must say. I just need to get some headers and a new exhaust (and tint, and new speakers, and an open air intake, and... it goes on and on!)!

Ah, this is the beginning of a very expensive hobby smile Are you going widescreen, or 4:3? I think Mitsubishi only does widescreen for their HDTVs, but I could be mistaken.

I was in the same boat as you, closed on my house in June, bought the 55" Toshiba HDTV (4:3 aspect ratio) a month later, and I absolutely love it.. But then I needed killer sound to go with the killer picture. Three months later, I have a Denon 3802 receiver, NHT SuperSeries speakers (5), an SVS 20-39CS subwoofer, and a Samson S700 amp to power the sub (400W). Roughly $3K for the home theater stuff, another $2K for the TV, and then another $3K for leather couches, to complete the room smile

Ouch, I could have bought a used Focus for that price. But I think it was well worth it.. Post some pics if you have any. And if you don't have a subwoofer yet, and plan on going that route, you can do no better than the SVS, even at triple the cost. (Granted the SVS is twice as expensive as most subs, but there's a reason for it)

The move went well. My car will be down for a little bit at least but that's besides the point. Might early December or something around then.

I was wanting a the Mitsu 53 inch widescreen for awhile but might have to go HDTV as we are getting a digital box hooked up tonight. They (cox) brought out three analog boxes before finding out I have digital ran to the house. Oh well, once I get the SVT fixed I can think about getting other toys.

Having digital cable and utilizing HDTV are two very different things.. Currently, about 6 stations broadcast in HDTV, and only a few programs are currently beind sent HD. Furthermore, you require an additional set-top box to utilize the HDTV with your TV, which costs anywhere from $500-1000. Most cable companies don't support HDTV yet, so your two options are a 72" antennae on your roof (which will give you NBC, ABC, and CBS), or a disc (Dish Network gives you HBO-HD, and DirectTV gives you a sports channel package in HD). Both require special HDTV-specific set-top boxes, which start at $600.

Now, given all that info, HDTV is good to have if you think you're going to have this TV for awhile, and figure the HDTV mess will get standardized in the near future. They also provide a slightly better picture because of the comb filters used in the TV.

Otherwise, a non-HDTV is a much more cost effective solution. Also realize that while DVDs are all widescreen these days, TV itself won't be widescreen until at least 2006. So deciding on what TV to get should depend on your viewing habits. The way I looked at it, is that I watch alot of TV.. So 4:3 made more sense to me.. A 55" 4:3 watching a widescreen moving gives you the equivalent picture of a 49" widescreen. Which is still big. And you save some money, and normal TV doesn't look retarded and stretched, or with funny grey bars on the side.

My 2 cents worth. I know WAY too much about these TVs. And short of the Pioneer Elite series ($6000 and up), I'd say the Toshiba HDTV sets offer you a better picture, at a better price, fwiw.

hehe ... that I know but why not give the excuse to the "wife" that I have to get a HDTV now to watch "anything." That was the point I was trying to make. laugh

I'm going with the 16:9 TV. It's HDTV ready, so I know that I'll have to buy the HDTV receiver eventually. I'm getting it for a good price, and I thought the Mitsu screen looked a tad better than the Toshiba screen. I agree with you OC when you say that the Pioneer Elite series is the best. I only wish I could afford one of those.

I already have a Dolby Digital home theater system, but I'm upgrading that also. I currently have Bose 501s for my front speakers. I have a JBL 10" sub, and Boston Acoustics for my center and rear speakers. I have the Sony STR-GA8ES receiver and my DVD player has Dolby Digital processing built in (it's a Sony also). I'm upgrading my receiver to the Onkyo 898 model along with all Cambridge soundworks speakers.

The TV is going to cost me 3700 or so delivered (3G for the TV, 400 for the extra warranty, 45 for delivery, 150 for the matching shelves for the stereo, and of course tax). The stereo upgrade will be about 3300 for a grand total of 7000! I know, I'm a great mathematician. I'm going to be shelling way too much money out in the next 3 months or so...

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome to the world of CEG.
