Thanks for the info on spring replacement. My question now is, Do i really need a spring compressor or can i just use a impact on the top nut to remove oem springs? thanks for the info...

If you are trying to thin the gene pool, then don't use a spring compressor.
Since most people value their lives and their property, you'll want to use a compressor. You'll want one that's pretty low profile because you'll have to use it while the struts/spring unit is still in the car.

The instructions you gave me the other day say nothing about using the spring compressor while the strut is on the car. In fact, the instructions actually make a point about not having to use the compressor while the struts are on the car. they just say to use it while undoing the top nut to remove the spring from the strut. in the past i have just put the strut on its side in some grass with one foot on the spring while using an impact on the lock nut and presto, it comes off with minimal movement. Just wondering if anyone has done it this way?

Those weren't my instructions.. It may well be possible to get the strut/spring unit out of the car w/o the spring compressor, but it'll be a whole lot easier if you do have it on there
Stuff will go flying if you try to remove the hat w/o the spring compressed. There is ALOT of energy stored in that spring.

Don't go messing with loaded springs - treat them with a lot of respect - I found out the hard way while trying to fix the spring in my garage door. By the way, when I did mine I found it a whole lot easier if I had a set of four compressors to fully unload the spring since there is a whole lot of travel in the stock springs. I only needed two to install the shorter H&R springs. The compressors mainly get used with the strut off the car, though I did end up using them to help take a bit of load off the rear struts to remove them from the car. By the way, many autoparts stores have free loaner programs for these tools - if you were in Canada I'd direct you to Canadian Tire. Eric
