Was he a state trooper? If not he is prohibited by law from using any form of speed detection other than VASCAR. IIRC, there is a box on the ticket he is supposed to check that details the form of speed measuring device he used.

Go to court, plead not guity, they will set you up with another court date. Once that second court date comes, make sure you get there very eartly and talk to the DA. Give him the sad story, and ask him if he could take the points out if you pay a higher fine. Just bargain with the DA. If you have a clean record make sure he knows about it. BTW, sooner of later, points will show up in your record if you don't get them off.
Good luck.

Any out of state moving violation on a NJ license = 2 points. 5 over or 35 over, careless or reckless, it doesn't matter. As long as it's reported as a moving violation. NJ has its own point class for O.O.S. moving violations, they're all 2 points.
