Hi guys,
I was driving through NJ this weekend and I noticed every time I passed a state trooper my Passport 8500 was showing X band. It was my understanding, and according to the Passport paperwork, thatalmost nobody uses X band anymore. Passport even tells you how to disable the X band detector. Have any of you guys noticed this. Is this something new or old. I go to NJ frequently and I want to know for future reference. This is the only state I've seen X band being used. Thanks.

Its no surprise, NJ uses all means to bring revenue to the state... Haven't you heard? State Troopers get bonuses for the outrageous amount of tickets they give out! hehe

Ugh, I'm still in court fighting my stupid 80 in the 65 zone... Troopie was bored and had nothing better to do than pull over a car that looks awfully a lot like his patrol car! Grrr!

X band is definitely the most popular with my radar detector. i'd say 2 times out of 3 when i see a cop and my radar goes off it's X-band. i guess NJ cops haven't caught up with technology yet. i've yet to have one shoot me with a laser.

i've got a uniden, not sure of the model number, but it's the best radar detector i've had yet. i've been through two bels, and a whistler, and all have crapped out on me. the uniden has excellent response and has saved me from MANY tickets on the parkway. it has paid for itself MANY times over again. laugh

Hey New Jersey Folks,

I notice this very often when I am driving in Jersey. I have friends that live in Glen Rock and I see cops using X-band all the time. I almost got nailed once because here in New England when X-band goes off it is a false alarm. eek

Very effective because no-one is expecting it. You cops are sneeky. laugh

I think that is pretty cr@ppy that Passport said that. Valentine Labs says that X-band INCLUDES a lot of falses, but never came out and said to ignore X alerts.

I've got a V1, and notice actually a pretty even spread of the radar guns. The cops in New Brunswick almost all use a K band gun, state troopers are steadily mixed between X's and Ka guns.

Laser has actually been illegal to obtain speed in NJ until very recently. Now I think there's 10 units in patrol on the GSP, which I've yet to be hit by. Most of the cops are using good ol' reliable Stalker units.

State Troopers are getting sneakier and sneakier though. They're now hiding in known false areas, aka Exit ramp 14 of the Turnpike, or others. So if you don't have a Passport 8500, or a V1, you're pretty screwed.

Also forget the instant-on crap. If you catch one in a bad mood, they'll sit on the side of the road behind a bush, and wait until they see someone speeding to turn on their units. So if no one in front of you is speeding (at least 10 over in most areas) and you pass the cop at 90, you're screwed, radar detector or not.

I'm pretty impressed with how well the Troopers hide on the Garden State Parkway for example, expecially at night! I've seen them almost around every sharp curve that neither a detector or your common sense would save you if you're speeding there, or somewhere off the road near a sign so that if you see something reflective you don't automaticaly thing of it as something suspicious until its too late... but best one is hiding around sharp turns, thats what got me!
