So I'm toodling up the Northway north of Albany around 10:00 on Wednesday night. I'm just coming up on Exit 8A when I see brake lights up ahead. So I take the car off cruise and downshift into 4th.
I'm in the right lane, and as I'm getting closer to the off-ramp for 8A, I see what the problem is: a car is going south in the northbound lanes! I pull waaay off to the right shoulder - so far off that my left side tires were on the rumble strips.
I got a glimpse of the car as it went by - it looked like a tan Chrysler, maybe a 300M or something like that. There also appeared to be more than one person in the car!
After it passed by, I whipped out the ol' cell phone and called 911 - the dispatcher already knew what I was calling about. About 60 seconds later I saw a state trooper flying down the southbound lanes - he was easily going 90 mph.
I read in yesterday's Times Union (page B8) that a head-on accident resulted, and heard that a fatality might have happened.
Damn, that could easily have been me.
