My 96 Mystique also has a split fold-down rear seat back, and adjustable lumbar support for the driver.

Rear dome and front door puddle lights, dash storage compartment and woodgrain trim, grille.
Both my cars have tachs and lumbar and split rear foldown, rear ends (i.e. trunk lids) are different but I believe that's mainly a model year, rather than make difference.
If all else equal buy a Mystique IMO.
Edit: Re post below; original list was 1.5% more, but I don't see any more chrome.

Here..let me sum it up. The Mystique is fast with class. My 2000 LS with V6 and 5 Speed is fast enough to beat an Acura Vigor, yet it's plush leather seats and wood trimmed accents and lighting package make it look more like a luxury car. Yeah, it's not as fast or cool as an SVT, or as luxurious as a Lincoln LS, but heck I'm 40 with a wife and two kids and it's what I could afford!

Is it worth the difference in price? Probaby not. Just like some people will take an ES300 over a Camry, or an I30 over a Maxima...these are siblings too you know.

I think the Mystique also has some subtle difference in seat placement, with a different ratio of front legroom to rear legroom. The Consumer Reports interior room measurements were slightly different.
When I tried a pre-98 Steek in a showroom, before buying my Tour, it seemed cramped, and I was surprised not to find the Tour excessively cramped. I don't know what was going on there, maybe the seat's height was adjusted weird or something.

The Mystiques dash (atleast 1995-1998) has some nice curvs. All my opinion, of course I'll offer a contradictary opinion I prefer the Contour dash lines and interior, as from what I've seen of the Mystiques, the center vents look like they've been simply bored into the dash (very awkwardly placed). IMHO of course! and front door puddle lights Is this something we can recontent into the Contour? I dunno; I just like the idea
Matthew 98.5 Contour SE V6 It has spent 1.5 years under the wrong identity ;-)

Didn't know Mercury had class. Guess I haven't been a big fan of Ford until I layed my eyes on the Contour SVT back in '98.
98.5 Contour SVT totally stock...for now.
