I pulled up to a red light next to a beater. My window was down and all I herd was "those Contours are so bad a$$." Later that week I was horsing around with an s2000. He took me off the line, not by much thou. We pulled up to the next intersection and he says to me "Your car fast and sounds amazing." When some one drives a car like that complements you, it's flattering.

Contours are bad a$$ I hate Ford, but when the Contour was released I was in LOVE! I wasn't even as excited about the Focus as I was when I first saw a Contour. I was lucky enough to be working at a car lot when a couple came in and traded this beautiful black V6 Sport for a new '01 Maxima. The next day I tradedmy old Maxima in for- of course- the Contour! There are lots of people who look at my car and say, "man that car is bad ass looking", even though it's essentially stock aesthetically.
1998 Contour Sport V6, Black *Cold air induction *Powdercoated intake manifold (more powdercoating coming soon) *Blue headlights, foggies, and signals (no reflectors) *CEG stickers & removed door moldings -------------------------------- 1994 Ford Aspire 4-door, looks like a big egg *64 hp 4-cyl *5 speed *"13 steel rims with go-cart tires *74 mph top speed *I'm going to auto-x the thing (but not compete)

I agree with the potential problems. I have had 2 water pumps go out within a year. The last one replaced under warranty for the original one. The only other major problem was the MAF went out. These are the only major problems that I have had in the 5 years that I have had the car. The Service Manager at "my" dealer doesn't like the 'tour due to the problems they have. Time for new springs and struts (BAT kit) after 85k miles, though.

I had a w/p (stressed out after being stuck in snow), front control arm bushings, side trans. mount, alternator, CV boot, RF end link, left tie rod end, blower switch, fuel neck flapper, power brake booster vacuum line and rear end links all go out in the year I've owned my 'tour. My old boss panned my car every time I would have a problem, and my response was always: at least it's not a HUNN-dai (he has a '99 Accent 3-door). Ford had wanted a Euopean-styled car when they built the Contour. Unfortunately, they got the quality-control problems along for the ride (maybe they'll get lucky with the Mazda6 clone next time). I just take it in stride, tho': I've had less downtime on this car than I ever did with my Pontiac Grand Prix. If someone doesn't like my car... SCREW 'EM! It's MY car! They just show their ignorance, anyway.
BTW, a bodyman once complained that Contours are horrible to work on. I don't think so; Last week I had to replace my bumper, lights and header panel that a nasty blonde you-know-what destroyed with a borrowed Navigator. I didn't even have to transfer screw clips! Lovely!

filler neck flapper! thats such a fun repair. i LOVE those. LOL
it seems that the contour is either a great car/crappy car story. i know people that have had ZERO problems. i know an individual who sold his 2000 SVT after 1 year of ownership.
