EEC-IV Code: 172

Used my circuit test lamp to retrieve the CEL (check engine light) from last
week on my 1995 Contour SE.

Using a 6" jumper wire and circuit test lamp the system turned on the
fans, then went into test mode. I was able to see the lamp flash clearly
while seated in drivers seat, so voltage meter would probably be set for 12
V range if using a volt-OHM reader. Saved $50. fee to dealer to retrieve
code, hooray!

Code: 172
Oxygen Sensor-mix too weak .... check component (according to Haynes)

Steve Pechkoff and Peter Tampas guessed correct, and yes I'm still on
original plugs and wires at 87K miles. The car runs smooth at idle and
pulls well, but boy is it stinky when warmed up and stopped (unless the wind
blows the burned oil away, maybe Bob Dylan could work that into a tune -
Happy belated 60th B-day, Bob)

Since the code has not been returning, could this have been bad gas?

If the O2 sensor was bad, wouldn't the CEL stay on continuously?

Any insight? or advise. For now, I'll run this Mobil 87 octane thru, and
follow with a tank with Sea Foam.

Update: assumption on O2 sensor

Several small sips of petrol may have combined to produce a lean mix.

Typically, I will fill up the tank, however, there were several times that small doses were added to the tank.

Could this be the answer?
