I usually fill-up with Irving or Exxon. Here in the mid-coast area self-serve is around 1.33-1.41 a gallon. I like the local stations because they have pay-at-the-pump and the locking levers on the handles for auto shut-off, (Although in the Portland area the locking levers are not allowed on self-serve pumps. I guess only properly trained personnel can run them there!)

I know that some of the testing places are in california, but anyways they don't test the car your driving, so why would it matter to you if their test car runs on chevron? It could run on goat cheese and really wouldn't make a difference for the consumer.

On of my friends was training to be a firefigher and part of the training was on how to fight certain fires. This is what he learned from fighting gas fires. This may only be true for California, but gas stations are allowed to put a certain amount of water in their tanks (the tanks already have moisture/water being underground they can add more). 76 gas is the best since they use the least amount of water in their gas. Cheveron under that. Shell and Arco being the worst.

I go to whatever is around when I need gas. I really don't care because fuel filters are pretty cheap. BP, Shell, Citgo, or Clark.

I was told from someone who worked in a refinery that the lower grade gasolines (87 octane) are not as clean as the higher octane fuels. The higher octane fuels contain higher amounts of additives that help to clean injectors, intake valves, removing varnish buildup, etc. This person recommended that if you are using 87 octane, to fill up with a high octane fuel every 8-10 tank fillups to help clean the above mentioned parts.
At least in the Scandinavian countries, I don't know about other northern European countries, the lowest octane is 93, going upto 98 as the highest.

Chevron is my favorite gas followed by Shell and Texaco. Chevron has a great addetive package to include Techron which is awesome stuff.

I had heard, back in the seventies, that Mobil was the first refinery to have all three grades pass the BMW test which consisted of taking a new engine apart, weighing the valves and reassembling it. Then they ran it for 50,000 miles (simulated I suspect), taking it apart and weighing the valves again. Whatever tolerences were allowed, Mobil passed with even it's lowest grade. I have not done any research on this but I am wondering if anyone has heard of this "BMW Test"?
