I usually use Mobil Super+, which is 93 octane. Once in a while, I'll throw some Sunoco Ultra94 octane in there, just to mix things up a bit. I've found a few Sunoco stations that sometimes sell Ultra94 for less than Mobil Super+.
When I first got my CSVT, I was using 93 octane from Hess, but after I switched over to Mobil Super+ I noticed that it seemed to run a bit smoother, and gas mileage went up slightly.

I like Chevron gas. I did a little research a while back and found that their Techron additive works suprisingly well at keeping intake valves clear of carbon build up. Chevron also sells the Techron additive in a bottle like STP. I've seen it at Wal Mart. You don't see Texaco selling their Clean System3 like this or Exxon selling their addive seperately. I drool when I hear you East Coast guys talk about filling up with Sunoco Ultra 94 at the pump! My Vortech blown Mustang needs all the octane it can get during the sweltering humid South Louisiana summers down here. I've got to really pull out the timing and run it rich to avoid detonation. The heat soak in stop-and-go traffic sucks. My Auto Meter Intake Temp gauge has gone to 180deg during extended idling in traffic.

The name brand stations don't always sell the fuels coming from their own refineries. Gasoline is pretty much a commodity item these days, supplied by a vast network of pipelines throughout the country. If a refinery for a perticular oil company is not nearby, then the particular oil company buys from whoever can supply the demand. Shell, IIRC, only has two refineries (with a few joint ventures); they can't possibly supply all of their stations across the country. Also, a lot of the private brands come from the big boys also. The bottom line - what you think you are getting, may not be what you are getting. How do I know? I work in engineering for an independent refiner.

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but according to Spatt's fiance, he has the worst gas.

Amaco 93 - most gas comes from and is refined in the same place. though I've heard the private lables like walmart/kroger & Quick Trip gas is not that good. Notice they arn't in the market to buy shares.

I alwayz get wal-mart or homerun Xpress gas, because they get in a price war here, and right now it's $1.149 while it's $1.189 at the amoco, etc. Cheaper=better, for my wallet atleast. By the way, how a station maintains its pumps is probably one of the biggest things. If they don't keep the tanks clean then when the gas in them gets low it'll pump all the crap from the bottom into your gas tank.

All gasolines must meet a set of specifications/standards, no matter who sells it.
