As we speak my 'Tour is in the tranny shop. I'm getting it rebuilt and installing an aftermarket cooler. I am pretty upset about this since the car only has 70K miles on it and I have flushed the tranny twice.
I'm trying to determine if any of the "upgrades" Ford made to the CD4E in later years will prevent the ATX from going south in another 70K. Anyone else who has had ATX problems, please respond to this poll!

Mine is a 98 with over 160k Yeah, the poll is for those who have had probs with their ATXs. Feel free to post if you have not had any problems, but I didn't feel like it was nessesary to include a question about whether or not you've had a breakdown.

No problems with my 98.5 GL Sport V6 ATX. Works great with the Superchip controlling it.

We've acctually had the ATX rebuilt on my mom's 95 LX twice, both times within 40k miles. The first time was at 67k miles, and it still shifted hard. Second time was at 95k miles. Both times it cost us over $2000. I still think it shifts hard from first to second, and the car has 111k on it now.

At 96,000 on my 98 LX the torque convertor clutch solenoid took a crap and the torque convertor subsequently burned up. Luckily, it was a covered under my EZ care warranty that expired at 100,000 miles (whew). And it only took minimal (cough) fudging to prove that the fluid was changed as prescribed in the manual. One change every 60,000 miles makes for pretty brown fluid. But a rebuilt ATX for a hundred bucks is a great deal, no matter what you have to do to get it.

mine went officially belly up at 89k but was giving indications that it was getting worse for a few thousand miles before that....shifted very smoothly when i first got the car but then started to shift roughly....i had it flushed and it was gone 3 weeks later...i am pretty sure that crappy lube did not add enough fluid after the flush and i was too absent minded to check the level after they were done with the service silly me thankfully the used warranty covered it to an outrageous amount.....so far i have a little under 9k on it since but i know that since these tranny's seem to exhibit some problems i will probably have to replace it again at some point if i keep the car i wonder about the power flushes though....seems to me many people have had failures sometime after having the atx flushed....maybe just a coincidence but maybe not
95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!! are my dodgers for real????

No, gdub, it's the flushes. No coincidence, I have preached against them for months now. I flushed my ATX about 500 miles before it burnt out, and my old '91 Maxima met the same fate after a scheduled ATX flush.

No problems here, but now I am concerned about changing the fluid with the power flush. Does the dealer do any better? And before there is any dealer bashing, McRee Ford has a very good service dept.
