$60+ per hour, plain and simple. If the $1000 cost includes removal and installl, you are getting a deal. I paid in the neighborhood of $500 to have my Quaife installed (and rebuild by replacing any wear items) WITHOUT removal.

I got my quaife installed for $650. That includes removal and install of the tranny plus some bearings and seals. Guess i got a pretty good deal.

Too bad I bought the quaife when it was still $1200 eek If only my diff had blown up a few months later...it would have only been half the price mad

My tranny rebuild was $1100, that includes removal/install of the tranny, and all parts that was needed to rebuild it. Labor itself was $500.

I'll tell you why...it's because transmissions are the Last Great Mystery. Most everyone knows everything BUT how transmissions even work, much less how to rebuild one. Once the trans is out of the car it isn't more than about 2 or 3 hours labor for a competent pro to rebuild any given trans. 2-3 hours at (stretching it) $75/hour is only $150-225. Add in another $100-150 in parts if nothing major is fragged and you've got yourself one hell of a profitable opportunity. But getting there is half the fun...since they practically started with the trans and built the car around it, there's a lot of labor involved in swapping them out.

"Buy the tools and dodge the fools"...I like it...I rebuilt the trans in my mustang by myself including parts and a shop press and a dial indicator and all that happy crap for less than the cost of paying someone else to do it. I had never done it before, a how-to video helped immensely, but now that I know, and now that I have the tools, I can confidently beat the living **** out of my spare and also offer my rebuild services to others.
