I tried the search option and couldn't find the info. I heard that Porsche had a hand in the design of the Duratec 2.5L V6 Contour motor. Is that true?

Some of the design work was outsourced to a group of engineers at Porsche, according to Terry Haines.

The basic CDW27 platform was designed in Europe, yes, but not just Germany. The Duratech is more of a US design, I believe.
I read somewhere that some of the 6 billion cost for the design was due to Ford USA employees flying over to Europe. Supposedly to "help or approve" parts of the program, along with long meetings. Maybe it was these "paid vacations" that drove the costs up?

terry can best explain but the initial prototype duratecs were built by Porsche and made 250 HP. Ford modified the engine, including "choping off" part of the crank (which may have resulted in the crank whip and our need for the DMD) to shorten the engine to fit. He has posted some pics that you could search for of the prototypes.

I wonder how hard it was for these engines to make 250? I don't know how to exactly ask this but before Ford changed the design, did the basic engine setup make that much power? Would the cost have been too high to use the motor in its oringinal configuration if there didn't need to be any modifications to the engine bay?

If Ford gave Porsche a spec for size (physical I mean) and cost (and I can't believe that these items weren't discussed beforehand), how did the Porsche engine end up being too big & expensive ??

Um...things change?
I do not know if this was the case, but when you are developing something the tolerances are going to be smaller than when you mass produce it. So maybe Ford said "It would cost to much to produce that part that accurately" (Something Porsche does and turns the cost over to the consumer) so they change some things so it can be way off but still function fine. But all those mismatched factory parts add up and start killing the output...
Just speculating...don't take me too seriously.
