Either the starter, or your ignition switch is having difficulty finding 'start'-hitting 'on' instead, or your Neutral/Drive switch is going bad (assuming you have a non-european MTX75)-indicating that you are in drive when you try to start.
I'd check the NDS switch first--it is the cheapest to replace. If you have a scan tool, read the 'NDSFLG' or 'PNP' parameter (PID 1101, 1 byte, bit 1, 0=neutral). If you don't have a scan tool, try mashing the clutch pedal between attempts and see if that effects the number of attempts before the starter kicks in--not a conclusive test by any means.
