This is a strange couple of question really... but I was just curious. If you have an automatic and you put your car in first, then second, then into drive... will it hurt it to do this on a constant basis? Just curious. Also, I was curious if you put your car in reverse, then put it into neutral(perhaps when backing down a hill), then put it in drive, is that better than just shifting neutral to reverse real fast? Odd questions I know, but something I've been pondering. Thanks for everyones input.

Anything like revving in neutral and dropping it in gear (drive or reverse) is a neutral drop = bad. But manual shifting in your automatic shouldn't be bad but pickup is usually slower than just putting it in drive and flooring it. Or at least that is my experience.

i manually shift mine every so often, it's good for it(well my baby anyways) and you can go to the red line unlike when it's in drive, unless you have a chip or something

I have a chip and it is pointless manual shifting when the chip changes the shift points anyway.

it depends. Some transmissions are different. I know some of the transmissions, specifically the hydro-mechanical type manually selecting a gear reasults in a higher line pressure that helps reduce slippage off the line, but will also result in firmer shifts as you manually select the next gear.
Like it was mentioned before, don't put the transmission into a gear with the engine reving higher than idle, its not good for it. Just like selecting a forward gear while moving backwards and vice versa.
manual gear selecting can be helpful and even benificial to the transmission especially under severe service like towing a heavy trailer or snow plowing, two things that will not likely be done with your contour.
