I've been looking into them lately as a possible project for next summer. My personal favorites are the Caterham Super 7 (mid-twenties unassembled) and the 1955 Porsche Spyder (James Dean death-car, for about 18K unassembled).
What are you looking at?

Shouldn't that be "during my mid-life crisis..." One of those would be fun. You've got an incredible amount of kits to choose from. Beck Spyder (just because it's so cool):

Oooh oooh! Manta CanAm or Marauder Lola! Stick with something tube framed unless the car you want to build is the same size as the donor vehicle. Otherwise I don't think they look good (out of proportion) as shown by that Fiero Ferrari posted here in Off Topic last week. Bleh!

have the beginnings of our kit car sitting in the basement. 1964 Ford 390 FE Big Block (just recently finished stripping it down - will be balanced, blueprinted, and converted to a 427 for a Cobra Replica.)

Caterham's get a from me. Great little car.[/b]The base package is $19,800 (self-build) and includes a 5-speed and 105hp 1.4L Rover I4. I don't think that includes shipping either. The one I like is the Roadsport with a de dion suspension, a 160hp 1.8L XPower I4, and a 6-speed. It would be at least mid-twenties (self-build) with these options.

Guy at work has a Super 7, with a Zetec engine IIRC. Took him around 300 hrs to build. Get's a lot of attention in the parking lot.

Funny you mention this; a buddy at work just finished his car: a 1993 (I think) McLaren. Looks like an older mustang convertable (90s) that has faint traces of a mercedes SL towards the rear.
It's a sharp car, but it's modeled off of the mustang. Has the 5.0 HO motor.
Are you in Mich? I hear McLaren just opened a dealership up in Troy.
