I only use 92 and higher octane rated fuel in our 98 SVT. Had a friend with a 98 SVT say to use 89 (Regular). I laughed at this suggestion! He said on a road trip the mpg went up by 5.. Was 25 lets say and is now 30. Didn't get the specific #'s but he did say by 5 mpg!
Is this possible? Why use premium grade? Just a fluke?

SVTS are suppose to use 92. Anything less and you will notice a differnce in performance.

I'd vote for placebo effect. Yes, a lower octane fuel probably has a slightly higher energy content. However, I doubt there is 16-20% more energy in the 89 octane vs the 92 octane fuel.
So I'm voting for placebo effect.

That doesn't sound right to me. The PCM is programed for the longer burn of a higher grade gasoline. With only 89 Octane the car should run like s**t.

I am just relaying what he recorded on a long distance trip. So there is no "thinking" he got that. I would never put less in my SVT, but he didn't like paying for 92+ so he tried 89...
I agree the car should be given higher grade.

What I meant by the placebo effect was he probably drove more gently because he was running 89, thus the increase in fuel economy.
I don't doubt he got the 30 MPG, I just doubt the fuel was the cause.
