Unless a large-scale war breaks out in the middle east, cutting off oil supply, we'll never see high performance diesel engines.

Car manufacturers will not invest R&D and manufacturing money into car engines that sell at a glacially slow pace and into engines which can not run on fuels currently available to consumers.

The oil & gas companies will never invest the millions, even billions it would cost to clean up diesel to Euro specs, given that it accounts for a very, very small slice of their profit pie.

It's a vicious circle, where low demand for the cars keeps demand low for diesel. It would take perhaps literally earth shattering changes to occur in the global economy before we saw a Ford Taurus TDL 5-spd capable of 130 mph, 50 MPG, and 0-60 times of under 9 seconds.

thats why diesel is so popular here!
the price of petrol is stupid. Diesel is just as stupid, but you get a heck of a lot more miles to the gallon!

Around here (L.A. area) diesel costs more than gas.

This is referring of course to the US of A. Europe has many fine cars powered by diesel engines right up to and including the S Class. Still not convinced ?? How about the Alpina D10 ? 245bhp & 368lb/ft and a touch under 160mph for a top speed.

Mondeo MK1 & MK2 (93-2000) were available with an old-generation 1.8l turbo diesel. 90hp. The engine/transmission would probably be a drop in into a contour. But you wouldn't want one, trust me. They are slooooooooooooow. One reason for poor sales of the Mondeo MK2 toward the end of its career was the lack of a modern diesel engine.

The good stuff did not arrive until the 2.0 l 130 hp TDCi in the MK3 Mondeo, available from the 2002 model year on I believe. It has 330 Nm torque @ 1800 RPM. I test drove one and was quite impressed. They move.

Cost of fuel certainly is an issue over here in Germany. 1 L of normal fuel is around 1 USD. 1 L of Diesel is around 80 cents. However, the annual tax on the diesel is a lot higher, and the 2.0 TDCi is the most expensive engine in the Mondeo lineup, actually more expensive than the V6 Duratec.

I AM convinced.
If I could get my next car as a wagon or hatch with a direct-injection turbo diesel and a manual gearbox, I'd bite.

When the wife retires her 99 Corolla in a few years, we'll need another car. (SVT stays...forever smile

Mazda 6 wagon/hatch would be nice with the above specs. Squirt it silver, gimme leather and a sunroof, and you can take my order right now.

Anyone at Ford listening??
