Has anyone out there done a Diesel engine conversion on their SVT Contour?

Like maybe throwing in a Ford of Europe 1.6 or 1.7 litre turbo diesel to save on fuel bills???

Think of the money we could save on fuel. Wow. Instead of 25 MPG on the highway, we'd get over 40, and all that money we could put into suspension work, rims, tires, etc.

Think about it... :')

I think if I were to go to a diesel I would get a tried and true VW turbo diesel. Even the old ones go forever, i've seen many with over 400k and still running strong. Not very fast, but handling is not TOO bad if you modify it a bit. Infact if I could sell my car that's what I will buy, but no one wants my car. NO one here wants a performance sedan, or if they do it's gotta be an import.

EDIT - I mean here as in my area (winnipeg MB)

Yep, torque.

My buddy has a 2001 Golf TDI that I've had the chance to drive hard a few times.

Believe it or not, it cranks out 149 lb/ft of torque - just 16 less than my stock SVT Contour!

And ohhhhh 55 MPG, with the hammer down!

From day one in Europe the Mondeo has been offered with several diesel options and still is in the current production models..........

The torque is easily increased too. Go to superchips.co.uk and check out the VW 1.9 TDI (See what else they have in diesel too; the Mondeo starts at 240ft/lbs and goes to 270ft/lbs, not bad for a 2.0 diesel 4 banger!!!) HP from 90 to 115 HP, and torque to 204 ft/lbs!! Bad news is you have to send your ECU to them (in England), but you can buy a "Mini Smart Box" from Van Aaken (vanaaken.com also in England) which increases HP to 120 (no torque rating available, but should be comparable to Superchip!) for around $450 US.
Then of course there's propane injection!!!

How much would a 2.0 diesel Mondeo engine/engine tranny cost. I think we'd have to order it from Europe, and ship it over($$$$)
Maybe easier to buy a rusted out complete vehicle and take out what you need! I'm off to check English classifieds!!

Terry, how much heavier is the diesel over the Zetec & Duratec?

the diesel in the mk1 and mk2 mondeos are ok at the best, slow at the worst. dont bother with them TBH, it's also mechanical turbo, not electric controlled, less tuning possibility.
the diesel in the mk3 though, now thats a different kettle of fish!
30-70mph is QUICKER in the diesel than in the V6!!!! laugh
bags more torque!
