I just checked out AutoWeek's web site and there was an article about the Mondeo coming to the US. It didn't say exactly when (I'm guessing 2004-5). Didn't really get into specifics. Anybody interested should checkout autoweek.com

Ford Motor Co. has made room in its North American product lineup to bring in the next-generation Mondeo from Europe, Ford COO Nick Scheele said. Ford also will enter the low-priced entry-level car market to compete against the Koreans.

In a meeting with journalists on Saturday, Scheele would not confirm that the Mondeo is coming for certain.
That's a long way off (and if, not when). It may be based on the Mazda 6, which will already be built here.

But it still sounds good.

And how did they make this room in their product lineup? By axing the Contour/Mystique (and soon Cougar) models. Maybe this time they will actually try to sell them? Of course, can't do anything about local salesmen pushing CDW27 customers into a Taurus/Sable where they'll make more $$$.

""""""SPORT COMPACT CAR magazine

Rumors&Lies Section

p. 42 Volume 14, No 8 August 2002

According to a report in the "Automotive News," Ford design chief J. Mays has admitted the company is looking at bringing the Mondeo front-drive sedan to the United States, porbably as a Mercury, and as soon as next year. The Mondeo, in first-generation form, was sold here before as the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, but didn't make it to North America in its second generation, although it's structure is the basis for the Jaguar X-Type.
If it gets here, and Ford is good to us, we'll maybe get the sporting ST220 version with a 220-hp version of the 3.0-liter Duratec V6 aboard."""""""

Sounds like there maybe something to these rumors, but then again, it could be nothing...

The Mondeo will eventually make it to NA. It is clear to me that Ford is simply playing games with the public by leaking inside information just to raise the public and the automotive media interest in this car. Very clever way to get publicity without paying for it!

Maybe Ford has learned a lesson after all with the lack of publicity about he Contour (in favor of the sedentary Taurus).

I just hope we will get more than a stripped Mondeo with the rental companies in mind ...

Whenever We get excited about Fords I get flash backs from my dealer experiences and all those posts from people who, many times swore they would never buy fords again. It's funny how soon we forget. Me myself being one.

I guess that's why ford does not care much in the end. Becuase they know that when there's a hot products on the market people will fall for it.
