Eek. Anyone ever retrieve the end of a broken key from out of the ignition? About 3/8" end of key is still in there. I can start and use car with remanining short key, but obviously the original full length key will not go in. Not posing any problems but it is ugly. Has anyone taken their key/ignition/steering colume apart? Re-formed car thieves? Thanks you in advance. PK

This is probably one of those things that absolutely has to get fixed at the dealer. Especially since you have that PATS system also ... all that wiring and stuff ...
sorry if I'm no help :p

I don't think you can actually retrieve the end, I think you have to replace the key cylinder. Cause I used to have an old VW Golf that had a broken piece of key in the ignition, driver's door, and hatch. The only crappy thing was about 3/4 of the key was in the ignition, so your keys would fall out all the time, and you had to use a different fraction for each other lock. So besides the long story, AFAIK, you actually have to replace the cylinder and you cannot take the key out.

You can put a VERY small dot of JBweld on the tip of the part of the key and put it in the ignition. Push it in hard but don't jiggle it around. Wait about an hour or two, then pull, VERY slowly. If it pops back off, you should be able to remove the cylider and take it to a locksmith. They MIGHT be able to remove it for you, or you can disassemble the cylinder until you have access to the back, and push it out.
Good luck!

Can you get a pair of hemostats (spelling?) in there? That's how I got a broken key out of my Miata's door lock.
