A mtx 96 contour I am trying to buy (down to a $700 price difference...so I am hopeful) has leather covered shift knob. The leather is damaged or worn in one spot. Can this knob be replaced? and if so is it simple enough for me to do myself (ie. is it more difficult than replacing a battery)?

I think the factory shift knob for your car was plastic with a simulated leather look. If you have a leather knob that looks like a factory knob then it is most likely an SVT knob. There is also a Cougar leather knob that has a different colored shift indicator plate on top. Is was available on one of the upgraded models, but I don't remember which one.
If you want a factory replacement, the plastic one is less expensive. I've never priced one, but I think the leather one is about $60.00. The leather knob responds to leather treatment, just like the seats and steering wheel. Ocassional use of Lexol, Hide Food, or another similar product will do wonders to help it keep looking good longer.

It unscrews off and the new one screws back on. The one I bought from a 1999-2000 Cougar was $30, new from Bill Jenkins. I'm assuming the Contour leather ones would be similar. It's the same as putting a light bulb in a lamp at home.

You guys are saying I should just grab my knob and twist it off, right ...ouch. Seriously, as a test I tried unscrewing the one on my current contour. I could not get it to turn at all. Big jim, my current car does have plastic one but the car I want to buy has the sport package which includes leather covered shift knob and steering wheel. Thanks carboy...~$30 sounds good...now I just need to get the car.

I'm not affiliated in any way with the party selling the item, or with E-bay, for that matter.... usual disclaimers
