whats up guys, right now i'm planning to change the plastic water pump to the metal propeller. Before i change the pump, i read that you have to drain the whole cooling system. Is it possible to make the change without draining the cooling system?

It is possible, but you will lose a lot of fluid when detaching hoses and such. So have some extra coolant + water on hand to refill when you are finished. Also, if you don't drain the system ahead of time, the coolant sprays everywhere. So if you are a neat freak, drain the system first.

So, you don't NEED to drain the system first, but it is helpful. And draining the system only takes a few minutes.

If all your doing is replacing the water pump you do NOT need to flush/drain anything. You dont even have to remove any pipes to do it. Removing the battery is about the only thing to make more room. Just pull the belt off, undo the 8 bolts (i think its 8), you will need to use a screw driver or something with a rubber mallet to pop the pump off the housing as it is stuck on with the gasket. Yeah, some water will gush out but nothing major. Takes 15 mins.

You lucky Duratec bastids!!!! :p
In the Zetec, you have to take the drive belt, and the timing belt off, you also have to take the valve cover off, and lock the cams, just to replace the waterpump... mad

Mine was far from a 15 minute job. I had a few extra hoses in the way that I couldn't manuever around. And then once I separated the pump from the housing, I had gasket material all over both surfaces. I ended up having to remove the housing so I could clean it up before putting in the new pump. If I were a better mechanic it would have taken an hour or so, but with my skills it took a little over 3 hours.

Yeah, I was just taking in account the time to get the old one off and put the new one on. It took me about 10 -15 mins to scrape the old gasket off the housing. I just used sand paper.
Just remove the battery, tht gives you alot more room to manover. Use a long extension for most of the bolts to get around the coolant pipes etc.
