Ive owned a 95 and a 99 M3. Both are exceptionally reliable with basic maintenance. Cost isnt TOO bad, but of course more than an american car. Ive also owned 2 SVT'ours, a 98 Cobra, 95 GT 5.0 and I share a Lightning with my father.

NOTHING compares to the feel of a german sports car.

Just my $.02

Definately the M3. Don't think I would ever own a Mustang, or for that matter another FORD. I love the CSVT, but hate the service I have recieved from multiple dealer service departments and the overall quality of the car.

I also think that it was Car and Driver that called the CSVT the working mans M3.

My parents have owned all sorts of bmw's. 3's and 5's. Right now they have a Dinan tuned six speed 540 with 325 rwhp. smile
Here are reasons for the m3:
1. There is no comparison in the interior quality of the m3 and the mustang.
2. You'll score more looks in the m3.
3. Better handeling.
4. I would have to go for the m3 for quickness. the mustang is quick, but the m3 has insane top end. by the way, they wiegh around 3500 lbs and rate the hp at the wheels (something around 230?).
Anyway, when you ride the m3 around you'll really feel like you are driving something special. I can't say the same for a mustang GT.

E36 M3 weighs 3175lbs. Dont know wat the stang weighs. You can pick up a good used 97-99 M3 for 24 to 31k depending on miles and if it still has warrenty on it. Service of the M3 is so easy and the 3.2 inline 6 is bullitproof. 0 to 60 in 5.5 sec and does the 1/4 mile in 14 flat. Sure the stang might be quicker but how much quicker. The M3 will hold its value and last longer and the service will be better. This is an apples to oranges comparrison. If you want to drag race get the stang. If you want to drive, get the M3.

Oh and the BMW states 240hp but its more like 250 to 260 hp. I dynoed stock at 225hp and 221 torque. This is at 2 different dyno shops. One in Knoxville TN and one in Atlanta GA.

Again, if I had only enough money to buy the car itself...mustang. There are incurred costs with owning a car liek the M. Regardless of how you look at it it will cost you more money in the long run (more expensive parts/insurance/etc.) If money after purchasing the car is not an issue, then hands down i'd go with the M. But as far as just having enough to buy a car, mustang. I never said which was better period...I said which would probably be a wiser purchase for the average joe. like me.

I'd probably go with the m3, but it depends on your tastes. If your friend wants to mod, the mods are WAAAAAYYYY cheaper for the stang and there are tons of them to boot.

One of the nice things about an american car however, is that if you break down in the boondocks and mechanic can fix it, I wouldn't want bill bob playin with an m3
