This is for my fellow tightwads out there. This is what I did to my shifter after missing third one too many times. If you've already done something about yours, read no further. First off, I took the knob, spring, and boot off. Next, used hacksaw to cut reverse lockout off below recess that holds boot up (about 1/4 inch below). Next I cut about 2.5 inches off of the end of the shifter(also with hacksaw). I had originally planned on threading the end of the shifter to match the threads of the knob, but it is about a 13mm shank vs. 12mm threads inside knob. I ended up drilling the knob out to go over the shank and gluing it all together temporarily. Also, I used some superglue to hold the boot/lockout handle up. It was a pretty close fit inside the knob, so I just glued the two together. I'm going to try to fill the knob with some epoxy at work tomorrow so I can drill and tap it to fit the threads that I will put on the shifter. The result so far, other than the knob still being a little loose, is a much shorter throw between gears. I went out first thing this morning, after the glue sat overnight, and tried as hard as I could, but didn't miss it one single time. Yes, I still have a few bugs to work out of it. It's a little harder to shift and I had to move my seat up a little to do so comfortably, but I think I can take the whole thing off and bend the rod back a little more than it already is to solve that problem. A few people I've talked to have had trouble with third, so if you are too, I highly suggest this. Once I get the knob securely mounted, I'll give the rest of the details. Hopefully, I'll get it all done tomorrow afternoon.
