Driving into work this morning I kick on my heater to take the chill off. Stop at a light and my RPMs drop to 500! Turned it off, everything was fine. Drive some more, turn it on, stop again and it went down to 500.

Has this happened to anyone before? Any ideas on what it could be?

Keep it serious please. Rip on me in the other post if you wish.

Thank you.

Could just be the drain the the alternator. Like when you are at a stop and crank your wheel all the way either direction, the revs will drop. Nothing serious, nothing to worry about.

My idle is messed up no matter what, I just tell people I got some phat lumpy cams and 5 turbochargers eek

This has never happened before though.

Usually the RPMs would raise slightly.

Hope the alternator isnt about to go out. If so glad I called Ford today about the warranty!

The RPM Drop is caused because of the lack of speed the car is currently going. So if your on a long drive say, and there is a pack of SVT's in front and behind you, You better Move your Ass!
Ha ha Couldnt resist. I think your car is pissed because it never use to drive in the back of the pack.

LMAO!!

My car idles at 800 so I don't think that 500 is too bad. Unless the car is shaking like it gonna stall. If not then I think you should be safe.

With the heater/air off it idles at about 800. When it is on it now idles around 500 and somewhat has a shake to it. It used to raise to about 1000 when it was on.

Guess it is off to Harrold Ford sometime soon. Cant be turning off the heater/air every time I stop.

Thanks guys.

My cars been doing this since I bought it a few years back, sure its a nuisance but unless you want to pay ford prices then I doubt you need to get it fixed. (Or do you have a warranty?)

Besides the vibrating of the strange idle seems to get the girlies excited!! eek There's a positive side to everything!

Hoody-Hoo!

James

Just a thought....
Maybe you should check the Problem Forum.
You'll probably find a fix for this.
(I havent heard of this one before)

Good idea Speed Demons.

I just checked in there and could not find what I was looking for.

So I did this - http://www.contour.org/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=006981

The warranty is still good on my car, but if it could be a quick fix I would rather do it myself then have the dealer sit around with it for days.

Thanks guys.
