good write up...i think the notchy shifter is a specialty of ford if not all american manufacturers....i dont have any experience with contour mtx but my bro's 2k2 mustang gt is very vague....i couldn't really go balls out when he let me drive it because i couldn't find second gear and so on when it was shift time

a friend i use to have got an 84 t-bird turbo coupe when he turned 18 yrs ago ( his dad was a ford dealer)...that shifter would also cause u to lose precious seconds trying to find the proper gear

95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!!
are my dodgers for real????

Great critique.

Sounds like a nice car, but still no bargan

The more I test drive (or hear reports) the more I like my Tour. There just seems to be problems with every car I drive, seats, clutch, visibility, structural integrity etc. that make the CSVT sooo much better when I drive away. Note: I haven't driven any BMW's or Audi's)

However if Ford through a turbo on the SVTF it might seem all that much better!!! :p

Speaking of shifting problems, I had the hardest time driving a 2001 Neon mtx. Maybe it was just me, but it seems like the gears were just too close together, and almost everytime I wanted to go into 3rd, I would go into 5th. Sorry to waste your time, back to the Focus (which I have also driven in mtx (SE), and I think it is VERY nice....)

I've heard rumores that Ford will through a roots type atop the SVTF bringing it to 220hp to complete the whole Supercharged SVT lineup - oneR ~ but then again its just a rumor :p

The Nissan SE-R has been known to have a "notchy" shifter, too. I drove one and yes it is sure not a "butter smooth one". wink

Re: the shifter. I think it's a 6-speed Getrag, so could be the same one in the Vibe/Matrix.

What does Getrag mean?

The tranny in the focus is more fragile than the mtx 75...so be careful!

'Getrag' is a German company name, like Daimler, Opel, Bosch, Porsche, Audi.....
