I'm looking for pics of anyones Mystique with a painted front grill. I have a spare one now, and I'm thinking about painting it black to match the car.

This is J-Lab's as seen at SZ 02. I'd say go for it, especially on a black car!

Good looking front grill. Must have been some work to get the slats out and the mesh in?
I'm not sure how to prep the grill so the paint won't crack or peel?

I say leave the vertical slats in and keep it looking like the Mercury it is. Paint all the chrome, body color.

If your going to de-chrome the grill have Phatt Spatt do the work for you, its the best way to go to have the paint stick properly and yes J-Labs car looks that good in person too, trust me

I'm not sure about acid-dipping the Mystique grille... I was there when J-lab did his front grille and it's VERY flexible, unlike the Contour one. It's more like rubber than plastic if you ask me, the weirdest thing.
Body shop was worried about the paint holding on to it, they used flex agents of course. Got it painted at a dealership BTW.
Removing the slats was a major PITA, not for the faint oh heart. It must have take Jeff a couple day's just to do that without messing it up. He hand-sanded the chrome away on his grille before giving it to the body shop for final prep.
And his car does look fantastic!

Thanks for the props, guys!!!
It took a certain amount of patience to do this, but it can be done. Just be sure to strip all the chrome off before you paint.
