I an having some problems with the clear coat chipping on the roof and rear driver side door. Is easy to fix this? Can it be wet sanded and then reapply the clear coat or should I look into having a shop do this?

I never heard of FORD paint chipping from only a few panels. If it is only the the clear coat, it sounds like the car had some paint work done and the car was not scuffed before it was painted. have a few shops look at it. You know always get a second opinion. It may have to be partially stripped and repainted.

I had a 97 Ford Ranger that had some repainting done on the tail gate and fender. About a year later the clear coat in a little area started to flake off. Before I got to take it to get it looked at I totaled it. I was wondering though why it started to come off. BTW repainted by my Ford dealer.

My clear coat is also starting to flake. Just on my driver side door and and above the driverside door on the roof. Ive never had any repaint work done it.

I think we have an epidemic here. Does anyone know how to repair it. Is it easy to wet sand and then polish? What products do we use? Or should the pros handle this?

Your cars were not ford paint guys. Just because the car was painted at a ford dealer doesnt mean they prepped the car correctly before painting it. If they didn't sand it properly it will peel. Haven't heard of any actual factory ford paint peeling off a contour. if it would the whole car would peel, not a panel or 2

What if it was a spot painted panel at the factory? Not likely that a factory repaired panel would peel, but it is possible.
Anyway, a factory clear-coat job should not peel, as it is applied to a wet base. I believe most aftermarket jobs/repairs are done the same way, but you never know unless you see it with your own eyes.
Draven, what would you recommend for chipping/flaking clear and not base? Could someone get away with rubbing compound + good polish every few months, or should they bite the bullet and get it repaired professionally?

Oh, it's quite possible that factory Ford paint flakes, cause mine is. Granted, the hood and trunk were repainted by the dealer (they won't admit to it though, cause it's flaking too. Long story), but the rest of the car has little white circles where the clear coat is letting go too. And I'm out of warrenty . . . frown
