I was just wondering if anyone has heard of or used any RainX substitutes. Not that I don't like RainX, it works well, but I feel I have to reapply it often. Now I have stopped at our local Ziebart and they have the Aquapel gas treatment for windows for $24.99USD and it has a 6mo warranty. Anyone have this done and care to comment or have any comments on this procedure, thanks.

Quality is remembered long after cost is forgotten.

use an abrasive automotive rubbing compound like 3M swirl remover or Meguiars step 2 and polish the glass as you would paint. Bugs and dirt slide right off and it lasts longer than rain-x.

I haven't personally tried this but I've heard if you rub a cut potato on your windshield, you get the same effect as rain-x...

What kind of Potato? Sweet, Idaho, Russet, Maine, Eastern, White, Red ? Do they all work the same?

What size ? #2, #3, ????? Do larger potatoes give better results? Does size matter?

Do you cut it in half long ways or short ways or should you just use a round potato?

Will french fries work as well? Baked? Mashed?

I hate it when people give undetailed responses!

Like (almost)all the other replies, I just wax my windshield when I wax the car. It is a lot cheaper than rain-x and simple/cheap to maintain with the same final results.

I actually use this glass cleaner from work that does a pretty good job. I may have to try the wax and then compare.

I laughed my a$$ of the first time told me this. Then curiosity overwhelmed me, So I borrowed a potato from work (work at Wendy's) and was simply amazed. Never heard of the wax thing, bot I have thought of it, just to chicken to try it.

P.S. Off topic, but I've also learned to wax my rims (Stock SE rims) It really keeps the brake dust off.
