It's just a flashing light. Sorta like having an alarm company decal on your home windows with no alarm installed.

PATS is an ignition interlock. Can't start the car without one of the coded keys. That's why the head of your key is so huge. No alarm though. Not that it matters, a good thief can disable an alarm in less than 15 seconds. When was the last time you bothered to look to see the source of a car alarm that went off for 15 seconds?

When I disconnected the flashing light module and took it out to pull the dash, I was still able to start the car. That doesn't seem like its a very effectice system, since it takes like 5 seconds to take it out...

F.Y.I. The LED is not what protects your car from being operated without the coded key. You could remove the LED and still not be able to start the engine without the proper key.

The LED acts as a deterrent, so I guess if you didn't know anything about Contours you would think it might be an alarm system. So this might keep some thieves away, but usually if they want your car they are going to take it anyway, alarm or no alarm. The LED also serves as a key programming indicator and warning indicator in case your PATS system isn't working correctly. The only way past the PATS system would be a master key that the dealers have.
