Alright...don't turn this into a flame thread, please! I was just laying in bed last night and I got this idea...so I'm asking. haha. Alright...is it possible to re-route the workings of the emergency brake so instead of there being the normal lever, there is just a switch type thing on the dash?

Yeah, I know it may sound weird and all, but I was just wondering if it's possible. If so, could someone provide a general overview of how it's done? (I won't do it to my car...but I'm curious how it would be done)

Thanks, and have fun turning this into a flame thread saying i'm crazy. haha

I think the next Mercedes E-Class will have a button operated "electronic" e-brake...

On our cars it's definitely mechanical. It's a cable that pulls through a sleeve not unlike a bicycle's brake system. In order to have it button operated you'd need to install something like a linear actuator on the cable to move it through its travel. A very complicated and potentially expensive proposition...

Now, why would you.. hrrm.. someone what to do that to your.. *cough* ..their car?? wink

You're crazy :p

Actually though, I believe what alot of amature rally drivers used to do was to reverse the ratchet mechanism for quick dissengage....

If that's what you were getting at?

haha. well, whenever i use my emergency brake for tricks, or when i want to, having the emergency brake where it is kind of kills me. i don't have as good of control on my left hand as I do with my right...so yeah. it would be cool to have a button...would make tricks much easier smile

Actually, I would be interested in rigging the E-brake to the reverse function, where you have to push the button to get it to lock, not to get it to release. Can it be done? If so, how? -Nick

I don't know if you can do exactly this but there might be another alternative... On my KP61 Toyota Starlet I have a handbrake mod that disables the ratchet when I don't want it... For autocrossing and such, or just fooling around. Then when I need it I press a 2nd button to engage the ratchet. Note that this is my stripped-to-the-shell wannabe racecar, and this ghetto mod was installed by a great AE86 Toyota builder.. out of welded bar stock et al. ..Not too stylish.

A little investigation in the shop manual should turn up some valuable information if you want to defeat the ratchet mechanism..

You can get a line locker and connect it to just the back brakes. Or all brake lines if you want.

Chris, would a line locker like that work when you're actually parking the car? I'm figuring it needs electricity to keep the line locked, right? Never used one of those..

Maybe I am wrong but isn't a major part of the Emergency brake the fact that it is an emergency brake? If all else fails than its still there and can manually be operated. What if power is lost, how can you stop if the e-brake is electronic. I wouldn't be willing to take that chance! guess its up to if you are willing to risk your car for it?!

Very good point.

If I were to do this, I would use some sort of hydraulic ram, powered by possible the power steering pump. You would need to do all the workings for the switch and then plumbing of all the hydraulics and solenoids. If the car had power, and the engine was turning over but not running, the PS pump would still be working and could move the ram.

Perhaps it would work, but again, if you lose electrical power, you are now SOL.
