OK, I'm just a dumb VW guy tryin to change the oil in Mom's 95 Contour 2.5V6. Man that engine compartment is stuffed! Where is the oil filter? I can't even see it anywhere. Must you remove a shield underneath to get to it or something?

After changing the oil on a Duratec, you'll be singing the praises of VW's designers. I miss my Dasher. Didn't have to jack it up (drain plug in front) and oil filter accessed from above and mounted vertically.

You might not sing the praises so much with a TDI. The oil filter access is very difficult from above and impossible from below unless you remove the lower engine cover. At least, unlike the Jetta IV and New Beetle, you DON'T have to remove the lower engine cover to drain the oil.

Try those damn VW's with internal filters. I HATE them. Of course, there are Nissan Pathfinders, Isuzu Amigo, all those SUV's with skidplate that must come off to get to the filters. A V6 Probe is pretty hard to change the oil filter too, they only have a tiny opening between the exhaust and the subframe where you can get to the filter. Why can't all the manifacturers make cars like a Dodge Neon where they have the filter right next to the drain plug?

Yes, so far I'd say working on my 4 Cyl. Passat is far easier than the Contour, but then I don't have the power of the V6 either. Ah, the price of "more power".
Nobody answered yet whether you had to remove a shield under the car to get to the filter. I'm pretty sure I looked up front when I was under there fixing the axle, but didn't see the filter.

you don't HAVE to remove it, you can work your arm up under there between the rear of the shield and the exhaust header. It's a little easier to do it if you take the shield off, but it's a number of torx bolts to get it out of there and most usually skip it.

Why don't they make things that need regular attention easier to get at. Especially when an oil filter can be ANYWHERE.
I checked Mom's transmission fluid the other day. Ever see where they put the dipstick for that? Then you have to check it at operating temperature yet and burn your hand trying to get down inbetween all those hoses and things to get to it. Fun trying to hit the hole putting it back in too.
Well anyhow, thanks for all the replies. Should be able to find it now anyhow hopefully. Sounds like getting it off/on may be another story however.

Sorry; I gave you the quick 'all you really have to know answer' as I was logging off. No shield removal necessary, but you will have to use the plastic end cap type of filter wrench. No room for strap/band type.

Another oil change tip: Cover the exhaust manifold with a towel or aluminum foil or have some brake cleaner handy, because you are guaranteed to cover it in oil when removing the filter. I crack the filter, let it drip, turn it 180 degrees, let it drip, the spin it off. That minimizes the oil you get your arms covered in. Changing the oil on this motor sucks, hands down.
